Artist Spotlight
Coco Garvin has always moved freely between music, art, and fashion. At age seven, Garvin started playing the flute and hasn’t put it down since, officially launching her music career by age 17. In the early 2000s, Garvin expanded her practice into visual art, regularly exhibiting with underground galleries like Tiny Creatures– a gathering place for emerging Los Angeles artists and musicians. During this time, Garvin became “fascinated with wearable art and drawing on fabric” before developing an “obsession with broken mirrors”. Garvin's interest in broken mirrors and wearable art quickly combined and gave way to a performance persona, with Garvin using the works as both costume and character. This facet of her practice can be seen in Toucan, her 2017 solo music project.
Coco Garvin continues to merge music, art, and fashion alongside her fiancé, Charlie Steudle, as Pour Deux– a genre defying synth and flute duo. Garvin considers Pour Deux to be the first time her creative interests have “merged in the way she always imagined”. Her visual art practice becomes part of the project through album art and stage projections, while her fashion practice shows itself via masks and mirrored ensembles blurring the line between costume and sculpture. For Garvin, showing her work on stage rather than exhibiting it in a gallery creates a more dynamic relationship with the work. “It's immediate—you can shape it, adapt it, and respond in real time with an audience. It's never static. It's always evolving, and it's always in progress.”

Native Plant of the Moment
Datura wrightii, commonly known as sacred datura, is Solid’s “Native Plant of the Moment”. As a perennial plant that blooms until October, Datura wrightii is definitely having a moment right now. Like Solid, Datura wrightii is native to Southern California and has ties to the art world. In 2014, Datura wrightii became the subject of the most expensive artwork by a female artist when Georgia O’Keeffe’s “Jimson weed/White flower no. 1” (1932) sold at auction for $44.4 million.
